The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday granted interim bail to self-styled godman Asaram Bapu on medical grounds in 2013 rape case.
Asaram Bapu was granted bail by a bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal, who directed him not to meet his followers post-release. He has been granted bail till March 31, 2025.
Granting interim bail to Asaram Bapu on medical grounds, the Apex court said that the 86-year-old convict is suffering from various age-related health conditions besides a heart ailment.
A trial court in January, 2023, had convicted Asaram in the 2013 case, filed by a woman who lived in his ashram near Gandhinagar when the alleged crime took place. Asaram is currently lodged in a Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan in another rape case.
