Participant Bunty Banerjee found herself under the fire for joking about the heinous rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Comedian Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent has been in headlines ever since a contestant made fun of Deepika Padukone’s depression. The comedian, also one of the judges, faced social media heat over his casual reaction to the joke on mental health. But the controversy doesn’t seem to end anytime soon. The same participant has now garnered attention for poking fun at another sensitive issue, the Kolkata rape-murder case.
Participant Bunty Banerjee found herself under the fire for joking about the heinous rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident led to nationwide protests seeking justice from the administration. In a video that has now gone viral, the participant could be heard saying, “Whenever there’s a tense situation, the Bengali in me sleeps and Bihari wakes up.”
The standup comedian introduced herself as a Bengali who was born and brought up in Bihar. She performed in the show’s latest episode in the presence of judges including Samay Raina, comedian Tanmay Bhat, producer-actor Raghu Ram, neurologist Dr Sid Warrier, and Balraj Singh, the owner of Habitat (the show’s venue).
Bunty Banerjee went on to ask the audience, “Any Bengalis in the house,” adding, “See, sab so rahe hain. Nahi. Thak gaye honge na candle march karte karte (Bengalis are sleeping! Let them. Must be tried by holding candle march protests).” This statement led the panel to burst into laughter.

However, the matter did not go down well with the social media community who heavily trolled the standup comedian for making fun at such a serious matter of national importance. The video was shared on X with a caption, “She cooked the whole community.”
A user reacted to the video and said, “So this lady, claiming to be a comedian, at one point of her show, mocks depression and at another point ,ridicules Bengalis for holding candlelight marches to protest heinous crimes. It’s appalling that people think such cringeworthy behavior deserves applause. The joke’s on them.”
