On March 15, 2025, an FIR was lodged by the Katra police against eight individuals, including socialite and influencer Orhan Awatramani, popularly known as Orry, for allegedly consuming alcohol within a hotel in Katra, near the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The accused also include Darshan Singh, Parth Raina, Ritick Singh, Rashi Dutta, Rakshita Bhogal, Shagun Kohli, and Russian national Anastasila Arzamaskina. This incident has sparked significant reactions from local authorities and community leaders.
The consumption of alcohol and non-vegetarian food is strictly prohibited in Katra to uphold the sanctity of the pilgrimage site. Despite being informed of these restrictions, the accused allegedly violated them within the hotel premises. In response, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have emphasized their commitment to enforcing these regulations rigorously. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Reasi, Paramvir Singh, underscored a zero-tolerance policy towards such infractions, stating that those who disrespect the law and disrupt peace, especially through activities like alcohol consumption at religious sites, will face stringent action.
Rakesh Wazir, President of the Hotel and Restaurant Association in Katra, also addressed the incident, highlighting the community’s dedication to preserving the area’s sanctity. He noted that even ingredients like garlic and onion are avoided in local cuisine to maintain religious purity. Wazir emphasized that visitors should respect these traditions, regardless of their private actions, to honor the sentiments associated with Mata Vaishno Devi.
The police have formed a special team, supervised by senior officers, to investigate the matter thoroughly. Notices will be issued to all accused individuals, including Orry, instructing them to participate in the investigation. This incident serves as a stern reminder that violations of established norms, particularly in sacred areas, will not be tolerated, and authorities are prepared to take decisive measures to uphold the community’s values and legal standards.
