A team of four officers from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is set to travel to the United States on Thursday, January 30, to bring back 26/11 Mumbai attack convict Tahawwur Rana after the US Supreme Court cleared his extradition to India.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the NIA has submitted the names of the officers to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and also informed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

A source from the Union Home Ministry told the publication that the NIA team is currently “coordinating with the US authorities and the NIA team is awaiting final confirmation” from the MEA regarding their travel.

The team, which includes officers of the ranks of Inspector General (IG) and Deputy Inspector General (DIG), will oversee Rana’s return to India.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Prisons Department has started making arrangements for his detention at Tihar Jail. Once in India, Rana will be held in a high-security ward, where his cell will be equipped with CCTV cameras to monitor his activities around the clock.

“His cell will have CCTV cameras and they will monitor all his activities 24×7. His cell will have an inbuilt toilet and bathroom facility,” another source from the Tihar Jail told the publication.

Who is Tahawwur Rana?

Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, is accused of being involved in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed 166 people. He had been linked to Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, who was one of the masterminds behind the attack.

Rana’s extradition was cleared after his legal challenges were rejected by US courts, including the US Supreme Court, which turned down his petition on January 21.
