The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has called on the public to provide feedback on the draft Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, ahead of their finalisation. Citizens can submit their objections and suggestions through mygov.in, with the final rules set to be reviewed after February 18. The draft rules propose significant changes to digital privacy, giving users greater control over their personal data. Key provisions include the right for individuals to request the deletion of their data, demands for increased transparency from companies on data collection, and penalties of up to Rs 250 crore for data breaches.
Another major focus is verifiable consent, particularly for personal data involving children or individuals with disabilities. The rules specify that “a data fiduciary shall adopt appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure that verifiable consent of the parent is obtained before the processing of any personal data of a child.”
