Mumbai Indians continued their upward curve in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) after thrashing arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by nine wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to register their third win in a row after a poor start to the season.
This victory marked MI’s first win over CSK since 2022, ending a four-match losing streak. The result means that the MS Dhoni-led side have only two victories in eight matches and their chances of reaching the playoffs are now hanging by a thread.

Mumbai Indians Creates History With Rare Treble

This victory marked the third instance of MI defeating CSK with at least nine wickets to spare. Previously, the Men in Blue and gold defeated the Men in Yellow by nine wickets in the inaugural season of the league in 2008 at the Wankhede Stadium in a match famous for Sanath Jayasuriya’s 45-ball ton. 12 years, MI defeated CSK by 10 wickets at Sharjah in 2020.
MI are the first team to achieve the feat thrice against CSK. Quite incredibly, no other team in IPL history have achieved the feat even once against the five-time champions. However, there have been 13 instances of CSK losing a match by eight wickets in the IPL and Champions League T20. Among non-IPL teams, Trinidad & Tobago’s eight-wicket win in 2013 is the biggest win against the Super Kings.
Overall, MI have achieved the ninth in IPL history. Only the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have done it more times, having achieved the feat 14 times. Infact, RCB has 15 wins by a margin of nine wickets or more across all competitions, which is the world record with no team having more.
MI are the first team to complete a successful run-chase against CSK in less than 100 balls (With 20 or more balls left) four teams. Kolkata Knight Riders (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) are the only other teams to achieve the feat twice.
Overall, KKR hold the record for the most wins in IPL history, with more than 20 balls left with 25 such instances. MI and DC are second on the list with 18 wins each.
Meanwhile, MI’s win was their 21st over CSK, the joint-most second (alongside KKR VS PBKS, CSK VS RCB) by one team over another in IPL history. Only MI vs KKR (24) have more wins against a single opponent. MI are the only team in IPL history with 20 or more wins against one team (KKR, CSK, DC).
