Maharashtra is set to witness heavy rains with Pune and Raigad on red alert and Mumbai, Thane and Nashik on orange alert for the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.
Mumbai and its suburbs are gearing up for another day of relentless rain as the IMD has issued an orange alert for the city today. Forecasters have predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in some parts, accompanied by thunder and lightning. This weather event follows a series of continuous downpours that caused waterlogging and disrupted daily life in the metropolitan area.
The possibility of gusty winds and flash floods has added to the concern. Alongside Mumbai, Thane is also under a weather alert, with predictions of very heavy rainfall in certain areas and strong winds that could further complicate local conditions.
Red Alert in Raigad, Pune
Meanwhile, Raigad district is facing a more severe threat, as the IMD has placed it under a red alert. This means that the region is likely to experience extremely heavy downpour, potentially leading to flooding, landslides, and significant disruptions. Authorities have advised residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel. Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Palghar districts, all situated along Maharashtra’s coast, are also under orange alerts, indicating the high possibility of hazardous weather.
The city of Pune, often known for its moderate climate, is now on red alert due to the forecast of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. Intense rains are expected, particularly in the mountainous regions surrounding the city. This heightened rainfall could lead to increased water levels in rivers and reservoirs, raising concerns about possible flooding. The alert is a response to the weather department’s predictions of continuous downpour in the region.
Pune and its neighbouring areas, including Pimpri-Chinchwad, are likely to experience heavy rainfall for the next two to three days, according to the IMD. The Maharashtra Information and Public Relations Department has issued a red alert for the district, advising residents to be cautious, especially in the hilly ghat areas where landslides and road blockages are a concern.
On Monday evening, Pune experienced thunderstorms, with lightning strikes and gusty winds, signaling the arrival of more intense weather. This comes after days of high humidity and oppressive heat, as residents prepare for the rainy days ahead.
