Emmanuel Macron sparked a furious response from the Kremlin after suggesting he was considering deploying French troops to Ukraine to help fight Russia.
Emmanuel Macron is pushing Europe closer to a World War 3 scenario with his “empty” threat of sending soldiers to Ukraine, the former head of NATO’s Rapid Reaction CBRN Battalion has warned.
Last month, the French President urged fellow world leaders not to be “cowards” and throw their full support behind Kyiv in their ongoing fight against Russia.
But the aggressive tone Macron adopted sparked a furious reaction from Vladimir Putin, who used his annual State of the Union to warn of the devastating consequences deploying NATO troops to Ukraine would have for the alliance.
Writing for The Sun, Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon noted Macron’s rhetoric could plunge the world into a new global conflict – unless he succeeds in persuading other world leaders to commit more resources to help Kyiv.
De Bretton-Gordon said: “I do agree with Macron that we should look at ‘NATO boots on the ground’, or at least not discount them too hastily.
“If we do, we may be handing the critical advantage to Putin. But is Macron’s approach more likely to start or stop this war?”
De Bretton-Gordon highlighted two pivotal steps the French leader would need to undertake to ensure he delivers on the help he has committed to give Ukraine.
He continued: “The number one priority is to ensure Ukraine prevails, holds the Russians and sends them back to where they came from.
“Macron should try and persuade his neighbour, Olaf Scholz, to unlock Germany’s vast Taurus missile stockpile, which could put a significant dent in Putin’s war effort.
