The Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced on Thursday that it will withdraw medical services nationwide for 24 hours, starting from 6 am on Saturday, August 17, to protest the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata. This decision comes after the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) resumed its strike, condemning the Union Health Ministry and West Bengal Government for failing to ensure the safety of healthcare workers. Here are the key developments in the case:
1. The CBI’s Kolkata office summoned five doctors and hospital staff for questioning in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, as forensic experts investigated vandalism at the hospital.
2. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused workers from the CPI(M) and BJP of instigating the vandalism. Speaking to the press after meeting with the Governor, Mamata claimed that the perpetrators were “outsiders” linked to these political parties and not the students protesting the rape and murder of a trainee doctor.

3. Newly appointed principal Suhrita Pal faced pressure from protesting doctors, who demanded action against the midnight mob attack. Pal urged them to trust her, saying, “If you can’t trust me for one hour, then send me home also.”

4. Fifteen policemen were injured in the overnight attack at the hospital, and nine people were arrested after the police released photos of suspected rioters on social media.

5. The police shared photos of people believed to be part of the mob, seeking information about them. A doctor, Anubhav Mondal, claimed he was among those in the photographs.

6. The Kolkata Police denied claims that the seminar hall where the trainee doctor was raped and murdered was vandalised, warning against spreading rumours.
