On India’s 76th Republic Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonstrated his commitment to cleanliness by picking up litter on Kartavya Path, promoting the ‘Swachh Bharat’ initiative and the concept of plogging. This act, witnessed by thousands, served as a reminder of the importance of maintaining clean public spaces through collective efforts.
The gesture came as PM Modi received Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Known for championing cleanliness drives, the Prime Minister has consistently highlighted plogging and community-led efforts in achieving a cleaner India. In his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address last November, he praised a plogging group cleaning Ganga ghats in Kanpur.
The Ministry of Defence also organised a large-scale plogging drive across 400 locations during December’s Swachhta Pakhwada initiative.

What Is Plogging?

Plogging is an eco-friendly activity that combines jogging with picking up litter, promoting both fitness and environmental cleanliness. It originated in Sweden and has gained global popularity as a community-driven initiative for a cleaner environment.

Republic Day 2025

President Droupadi Murmu presided over the Republic Day ceremony by unfurling the national flag at Kartavya Path, accompanied by a 21-gun salute using indigenous 105-mm Light Field Guns. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto graced the occasion as the chief guest.
This year’s celebrations marked 75 years since the adoption of the Constitution, emphasising the theme of “Jan Bhagidari” (people’s participation). The government invited 10,000 “Special Guests” from diverse walks of life, including top performers and beneficiaries of government schemes, to witness the parade.
