The purpose of observing International Day of Mine Awareness is to help in mine action work and create awareness about landmines and their complete eradication.
Landmines in conflict zones in various parts of the world have killed lakhs of innocent people including children. This year United Nations Mine Action Service (UN MAS) is observing the International Day of Mine Awareness with the theme “Safe Ground, Safe Steps, Safe Home”.
The objective of observing this day is to highlight the impressive achievements of the international anti-mine community. This day also raises awareness about making efforts in mine action works and slowly progressing towards the complete eradication of mines. The United Nations General Assembly on December 8, 2005 declared April 4, as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
