With the arrival of new technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing, the nature of warfare is changing and the Indian army is preparing for it by hiring specialists, first through the Territorial Army. The Army is also in the process of hiring different kinds of soldiers – people proficient in information technology, and other domain experts in hypersonic technology, space, cyber and robotics. The other areas include 5G/6G communications, directed energy weapons like lasers, digitisation, deep learning, drones and counter drones, block chain technology, loitering munitions and 3D printing.
The 16different kinds of technologies apart, different language skills are necessary for at least some soldiers of tomorrow. Mandarin could be one of them.
Speaking to reporters today, Lieutenant General Rakesh Kapoor, said the army needed to absorb technology and this was why it’s “decade of transformation” had begun. The army was studying the Ukraine-Russia war and the use of technology and was already into the usage of drones of different types. High level review meetings are to be held every three, six and twenty four months. The army is also working with the Indian Institutes of Technology and government institutions like the National Quantum Mission.
