The deal for the Brahmos (named after rivers Brahmaputra and Moscow) for both services is for about 250 supersonic cruise missiles valued at approximately Rs 20,000 crore.
The purchase of a huge consignment of Brahmos missiles by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force is before the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), headed by defence minister Rajnath Singh and including the chief of defence staff General Anil Chauhan, the three chiefs and senior bureaucrats and scientists. The meeting is likely at noon tomorrow.
The deal for the Brahmos (named after rivers Brahmaputra and Moscow) for both services is for about 250 supersonic cruise missiles valued at approximately Rs 20,000 crore. The Army is likely to get a slightly larger number of the missiles, which have a range of 300 km. They were developed jointly by India and Russia about 30 years ago. The Navy also has the Brahmos missile: a similar consignment was cleared a few years ago. In recent years, India has sold three batteries of Brahmos missiles to The Philippines for its Marines and there is some discussion regarding additional purchases.
Also on the agenda is the refit of a submarine. Refits are not capital acquisitions but come out of the revenue budget of the defence ministry, but they often involve huge sums of money, which is probably why it has been included.
The DAC is also expected to discuss the acquisition of a ship-launched torpedo and anti-aircraft missiles, besides several other major projects.
