Team India had a mixed day at the office at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday (August 4) as the men’s hockey team produced an inspired performance to reach the semifinal, but badminton star Lakshya Sen was outplayed by defending champion Viktor Axelsen in the semifinal match.
Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain was also shown the exit door in the quarterfinals of her boxing event, while Indian women’s skeet shooters and the men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol contestants failed to make it to the finals of their respective events.
Men’s Hockey: Indian team brushes Britain aside
The Indian men’s hockey team registered a thrilling win over the Great Britain side in the quarterfinal of the event to book their place in the semis. India, who were down to 10 men in the game managed to hold Britain to a 1-1 draw at the end of the 4th quarter to force a penalty shoot-out in which Indian keeper PR Sreejesh came up big to help the men in blue clinch a 4-2 win.
Boxing: Lovlina shown exit door
Lovlina Borgohain was ousted from contention for a medal as she went down to Li Qian in the quarterfinal of the 75 Kg women’s event. The Indian fell to her Chinese counterpart on a 1-4 split verdict after the end of the stipulated three rounds of action.
Athletics: Women’s 3000m Steeplechase – Parul Chaudhary
Parul Chaudhary finished 8th in the 1st heat of the women’s 3000m steeplechase event as she clocked a time of 9:23.39. She was eliminated from the event despite her best efforts as only the top 5 from the heat advanced to the subsequent round.
Athletics: Men’s Long Jump – Jeswin Aldrin
Jeswin Aldrin failed to make it out of the qualification phase of the event as he could only manage a 26th-place finish with a best effort of 7.61m. The top 12 athletes in the qualification earn progress, which the Indian missed out on.
