BCCI announced squad for women’s Asia Cup 2024 set to be held in Sri Lanka from July 19. Harmanpreet Kaur will be leading the side where most of the members have been retained from the current playing squad against South Africa.
The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) announced the squad for the upcoming women’s Asia Cup 2024 on Friday, July 6. The selection committee has retained 15 out of the 17 players currently playing in the series against South Africa and left out Amanjot Kaur and Shabnam Shakil.
Shakil was a late addition to the team for all three formats to reinforce the seam attack and is yet to make her debut for the national side. On the other hand, all-rounder Kaur also didn’t feature in any of the matches of the tour.
The rest of the squad contains all the familiar names with Harmanpreet Kaur set to lead the team with Smriti Mandhana acting as her deputy. Apart from the 15-member squad, the selection committee has also named Shweta Sehrawat, Saika Ishaque, Tanuja Kanwer and Meghna Singh as travelling reserves. The ninth edition of the women’s Asia Cup will begin from July 19 in Sri Lanka with the final of the competition to be played on July 28.
A total of eight teams will be seen participating in the event which have been divided into two groups. India have been put in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE and Nepal. On the other hand, Group B contains Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The opening game of the event will be played between UAE and Nepal on July 19 at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Dambulla while India will begin their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan at the same venue later in the day.
