Two children tested positive for the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Nagpur, increasing the total number of cases of the respiratory illness to seven. The two children are aged seven and 14.
In the wake of the Nagpur cases, Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar has called for a meeting at 3 pm at St. George’s Hospital Health Centre. Union Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav will also be in attendance.
A two-month-old boy admitted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad has been detected with the virus, while Bengaluru has reported two infections. This includes a three-month-old baby, who has been discharged, and an eight-month-old, who is recovering at a hospital. On Monday, Tamil Nadu reported two cases of HMPV, one each in Chennai and Salem.

The Union health ministry in a statement said HMPV is a respiratory virus that can cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections in people of all ages.
Calling it a seasonal disease which is prevalent in winter and summer, Union health ministry in a notification said, “Citizens are advised to cover their mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue paper when coughing or sneezing, wash their hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer. They must stay away from public places if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough or sneezing.”
Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday assured that the people do not need to worry amid rising concern around HMPV as the health systems and surveillance networks of the country are vigilant and ready to respond promptly to any emerging health challenges.
Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar on Monday urged people not to panic amid concern about HMPV cases. Abitkar also advised people to follow the guidelines laid out by the government.
