The government said that all airport operators have been directed to carry out thorough evaluation of civil, electrical and technical aspects of airport buildings every year before the monsoons.
The Central government told the Delhi High Court on Monday that a high-level committee has been constituted to probe the roof collapse at Terminal 1 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, in which one person was killed [Civil Safety Council of India v. Union of India and Ors].
A Bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela was informed that the committee set up by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
The Court was told that the government has taken cognisance of the incidents at Delhi, Jabalpur and Rajkot airports, and that all the airport operators across the country have been directed to carry out third-party audits of airport buildings through institutions like the IIT.
The government further said that all airport operators have been directed to carry out thorough evaluation of civil, electrical and technical aspects of airport buildings every year before the onset of monsoons.
The Court was also told that a first information report (FIR) has been registered for the offence of causing death due to negligence.
The information was furnished by the Central government in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into recent mishaps at airports.
