A journalist in Haiti told Daily Express US that some Haitians are “angry” with the US and “want a Haitian-led solution to the crisis”.
People in Haiti are “angry” with the US as Haitians demand the opportunity to fix their country without outside interference, a journalist inside the country tells Daily Express US.
Gang violence has been a constant in Haiti for years, especially in its capital Port-au-Prince. A state of emergency was declared by authorities.
But it has escalated in recent weeks as gangs aim to remove acting Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, from power.
A journalist based in Port-au-Prince, who wished to remain unnamed, tells Daily Express US that Haitians are angry at the US and other international partners for their role in the crisis.
He said: “The Prime Minister is not respected by people here. He was not elected, he was put into power with the help of the international community including the US, and was supposed to hold an election. But he didn’t.
“In this vacuum of leadership, you have the gangs. I bear witness to what is happening. There is a lot of anger towards the US particularly, but also to the general international community.
“What I hear from people when they talk to me is that they want a Haitian-led solution to the crisis. They want Haitians to take back control.”
“They want the international community to remove themselves from Haiti and let the Haitian leaders that are not implicated in corruption to come up with some sort of solution that is sustainable.
“They want peace and an election to elect legitimate leaders. But what we are seeing is a continuation of the issues after the previous leader was assassinated.
“People are asking, for once, to let Haitians deal with their problems.”
Henry came to power in 2021 after the assassination of the previous leader Jovenel Moise.
During the process of selecting a new leader, Henry’s claim to power was boosted when ambassadors from the US, France and the United Nations informally threw their support behind him.
