A 59-year-old woman died after her mentally ill son stabbed her several times and set their house in Haryana’s Gurugram ablaze, police said. The 27-year-old son allegedly got infuriated after being called “mad” by his mother.
Police have taken the son — Atrish — into custody, NDTV reported. The victim — identified as Ranu Shah — lived with her husband and son at a posh apartment complex, Vipul Greens, in Gurugram Sector 48.
For a long time now, Atrish had been under medical care for his illness and as per their neighbours, he used to have arguments with his parents on a regular basis.
Shah’s neighbours late on Sunday saw that their flat was set on fire. Soon after which firefighters and police were called to the scene.
Authorities broke the flat’s door open and rescued Shah, who had suffered critical burn injuries. They rushed her to a nearby private hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Police noted that as per preliminary investigation, they have found that Atrish would often, in a distressed state, would attack his mother.
In a similar situation Sunday night, Shah reportedly called her son “mad”. Triggered by her words, the 27-year-old ended up stabbing Shah multiple times and then set their flat on fire.
Shah’s husband was away at the time of the incident, the report said.
Reportedly, senior police officer Mayank Gupta had said that Atrish would be evaluated for his mental health before any further decision on the case proceedings is taken.
