Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed the first chargesheet in the horrific case of rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9. The chargesheet names Sanjay Roy as the prime accused, based on forensic evidence, witness statements, and CCTV footage. The investigation, which has been ongoing for two months, has unearthed significant details about the crime and the accused’s involvement, including that the accused was in apparently in an inebriated state during the incident.

DNA Evidence Links Accused to Crime

Sources revealed that Sanjay Roy, who was allegedly in an inebriated state during the incident, was arrested by Kolkata Police on 10th August at 10 am. Forensic evidence has played a crucial role in the case, with blood and tissue samples found under the victim’s nails matching Roy’s DNA. These samples were sent to AIIMS Delhi and the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for analysis.

Charges and Punishments Under Law

The CBI has charged Sanjay Roy under several sections of the law, including:

– Section 64: Punishment for rape, with a minimum sentence of ten years, extending to life imprisonment.

– Section 66: Punishment for causing the death of a woman or leaving her in a vegetative state during the offence, with a minimum of 20 years of rigorous imprisonment, life imprisonment, or death penalty.

– Section 103(1): Punishment for murder, which can result in death or life imprisonment, along with a possible fine.

Timeline of the Crime

The crime occurred during the night of 8th-9th August when the victim, a junior doctor, was with her colleagues in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College. CCTV footage and call data records (CDR) analysis revealed Roy’s movements inside the hospital. He was seen entering the medical college at 3:42 AM on 9th August, parking his bike near the main gate. By 3:48 AM, he was seen entering the emergency building, and at 4:03 AM, he appeared on the third-floor corridor, near the scene of the crime. Roy was last seen leaving the hospital at 4:37 AM on his bike.
