New Delhi: In a big step against the rising cases of digit arrest and cyber fraud in the country, the Central government has now blocked 17,000 WhatsApp accounts on the instructions of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) wing.

According to the information, most of these numbers were active from Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand.

I4C took significant action against cyber fraud and blocked these accounts.

The move comes amid an increasing number of digital arrest cases in the country with people reporting losses in lakhs and crores.
Last month, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs formed a high-level committee to investigate digital arrest scam cases and cyber fraud. The panel was instructed to take immediate action against the perpetrators.

The committee was announced days after PM Narendra Modi flagged the issue of fraudsters targeting people with the cyber crime of “digital arrests” and urged people to adopt the mantra of “stop, think and take action” when faced with such a scam, asserting that these steps will provide digital security to them.

Over 6,000 complaints of digital arrests have been registered this year, a source said. “A special campaign will be conducted to curb incidents of digital arrests,” the source added.
