A month after several workers got trapped inside theSLBC tunnelafter it collapsed in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool, the rescue teams have found another body early Tuesday morning. This is the second body that the teams have found, however, they are yet to retrieve it.
A total of eight people including engineers and labourers were trapped in the SLBC project tunnel when a portion of it collapsed on February 22. After a heavy reasue operation, the the body of Gurpreet Singh, a TBM operator, was recovered on March 9 and handed over to his family in Punjab.
Around 700 personnel of 25 state, central and private agencies are engaged in the search operation. All the workers are feared to be dead by now.
This comes after Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Monday asked the officials to expedite the operation to locate the seven people trapped inside the partially collapsed tunnel. He asked them to consult experts to plan the mission effectively.
During a meeting with officials overseeing the search, he suggested appointing IAS officer Shivashankar Lotheti to closely monitor the operation. The teams told the CM that the rescue work is underway to remove soil, stones, and debris, including parts of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) that was damaged during the collapse.
They also added that dewatering is also being carried out at the site.
Officials said that 30 metres of the area at the accident site has been identified as particularly dangerous. And this is why they have recommended that the search be carried out according to the scientific studies conducted by the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI), reported PTI.
