Police have arrested a man named Gnanasekaran from the Kotturpuram area for allegedly sexually assaulting a second-year female student on the campus of Anna University in Guindy, Chennai. According to officials, Gnanasekaran ran a roadside pull-cart biryani shop near the university. The incident, which occurred late on Monday evening around 8 PM, led to massive protests at Anna University.
Police sources revealed that the victim and her boyfriend, a third-year student at the university, were together on campus when the suspect approached them. “He had recorded a video of them together and blackmailed them,” police sources said. Following a physical attack on the boyfriend, who fled the scene, the accused sexually assaulted the girl.
The victim filed a complaint at the Kotturpuram police station on Tuesday, prompting swift action. “The accused has been arrested, and the investigation is still underway,” said an official police statement.
Reacting to the incident, Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai expressed outrage. “Crimes against women are at an all-time high. Now, this is not only shocking but for a moment we all felt paralysed. One of the safest places, Chennai, is the sprawling Anna University campus,” he said.
