Aamir Khan Says He Went Into ‘Depression’ When Laal Singh Chaddha Failed: ‘My Performance Didn’t Work As…’

The film released in 2022.

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, who has talked about his battle with depression, recently said he feels down for weeks when his films fail. At the ABP Network’s Ideas of India 2025 event, Aamir, who sees himself as an “emotional person,” shared, “When my films don’t work, I feel sad. Filmmaking is tough, and sometimes things don’t go as planned. In Laal Singh Chaddha, my performance was a bit too high, and it didn’t work as well as Tom Hanks’ version.”

Aamir Khan went on to add, “When my films fail, I go into a sort of depression for two to three weeks. Then, I sit with my team, analyze what went wrong, and learn from it. I really value my failures because they push me to do better.”

It is no secret that when Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha hit theatres in August 2022, it failed to impress the audience and earned hardly Rs 60 crore at the Indian box office. Over a year after the film’s release, Aamir Khan’s former wife, Kiran Rao has now revealed that the film’s failure took a toll on family too.

“It did take a toll on us,” Kiran had earlier told Indian Express and then added, “As a family, we were all around Aamir.” She further talked about Aamir’s decision to take a break after Laal Singh Chaddha’s failure and revealed that the actor wanted to spend time with his family.

Asked what might have resulted in Laal Singh Chaddha’s failure, Kiran explained, “We have thought about it a lot and Aamir has spoken about it extensively. The pitch of the film was maybe not what people expected after seeing Forrest Gump. The pacing perhaps didn’t quite work and we were coming out of COVID-19 and maybe it was not the right film to bring straight after Covid.”
